One-quarter of Earth's surface is covered in grasslands. The grasslands biome can be found in the center of large continents or alongside large deserts. Grasslands located near the equator have very hot climates, so the grass is dry.
There are two main types of grasslands - savanna and temperate. Savannas, or tropical grasslands, consist mainly of grass and a few trees and shrubs.Savanna is located in parts of Australia, central South America, central and South Africs, and some parts of India. In central Africa, savanna covers 5 million square miles (13 million square kilometers).
