People have been riding skateboards since they were invented in America during the 1940s. The first skateboards were built by kids. They took the wheels off their roller skates and nailed them to the bottoms of flat wooden planks. Soon thousands of kids took their skateboards to the streets in places like New York's Lower East Side and Santa Monica, California.
