According to the World Meteorological Organization, floods are the most common and widespread of all natural disasters, except for fires. In terms of lives lost and property damaged, however, floods are the most destructive natural disaster in the United States and the world. Most U.S. communities have experienced some kind of flooding, usually after spring rains, heavy thunderstorms, or winter snow melt. Because floods can occur in any part of the country, at any time of the day, and at any time of the year, everyone needs to be aware of their dangers and prepare for them.
